African violets, Boston ferns, orchids, spider plants, and catnip are all on the ASPCA's non-toxic list for cats, which makes them popular choices for owners who want greenery in a cat-friendly home. Spider plants in particular contain mild compounds chemically similar to those in catnip, which is why cats are often drawn to chew on them — that curiosity is generally harmless here, unlike with many other houseplants.

"Non-toxic" is a narrower claim than "risk-free," though: any plant material can cause mild stomach upset or vomiting simply from being fibrous and unfamiliar, and potting soil, fertilizer, or decorative gravel in the pot can carry their own separate risks. These five are a good starting list for a cat owner replacing more dangerous plants, not a guarantee that a cat can eat unlimited amounts without any reaction at all.
