This category covers a genuinely different kind of danger than food toxicity — hair ties, rubber bands, string, ribbon, and tinsel are all "linear foreign bodies," a term vets use for long, thin objects that a cat's tongue (with its backward-facing barbs) can't easily spit back out once swallowing starts. As the intestine tries to move the object along, it can bunch or "plicate" around the string, and in severe cases the object can saw through the intestinal wall, causing a life-threatening perforation.
Tinsel is the best-known seasonal example — its shiny, moving quality is genuinely attractive to cats — but everyday household items cause the same emergency year-round. If you ever see a string or thread trailing from a cat's mouth or rear end, the standard advice is not to pull on it: pulling can worsen the internal damage. This is a same-day emergency-vet situation, not a wait-and-watch one.
