Can cats eat Vinegar?
Caution. A few drops of vinegar on food (e.g. a chip) aren't acutely toxic to cats, but concentrated vinegar is a mouth irritant and cats exposed to a spilled bottle or vinegar-based cleaning spray can develop esophageal and respiratory irritation.
If your cat has eaten vinegar
- Small splash licked: rinse mouth with water if possible, monitor for drooling.
- Larger spill or significant exposure: call your vet.
- Pickled food with onions: treat as onion exposure โ urgent vet contact.
What's the full picture?
Distilled white, malt, balsamic, apple cider โ all vinegars are dilute acetic acid (5โ8% typically). A cat licking a splash off the floor is unlikely to have a medical emergency, but will drool and may retch.
Vinegar-based home cleaning products are the more realistic hazard. Cats walking through freshly mopped floors with vinegar solution can lick it off paws and have significant mouth irritation.
Pickled foods (pickled onions, pickled eggs) combine vinegar with other concerns (allium toxicity, salt) โ more dangerous than vinegar alone.

About this guidance
Every entry on this site is compiled from published US veterinary toxicology sources โ AAFP, ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (ASPCA APCC) references, AVMA-registered practice materials, and peer-reviewed feline medicine literature. Where the evidence is mixed, we err on the cautious side because cats are unusually sensitive to many common substances that are harmless to humans and even to dogs.
This is general information written for US cat owners. It is not personalised veterinary advice for your specific cat, their age, weight, medical history, or the exact exposure you're dealing with. If your cat has eaten something or is unwell, call your vet first. The ASPCA Poison Control on (888) 426-4435 is available 24/7 for a small fee and can tell you whether an emergency visit is needed.
