Can cats eat Fish oil / omega-3 supplements?

Caution. Fish oil isn't toxic — some vets prescribe it for cats with joint issues. The risk is dose and contamination. Human omega-3 capsules often contain vitamin A or E at levels high for cats, and a whole-bottle ingestion can cause serious problems.

  1. For one or two chewed capsules: monitor.
  2. For a chewed bottle or unknown amount: call your vet.
  3. If the product contains vitamin A or D: urgent vet contact.

What's the full picture?

Cat-specific fish oil or omega-3 products dosed per your vet's advice are safe and sometimes beneficial. Human supplements are more concentrated and often include vitamin A, vitamin E, or vitamin D as 'extras' — all of which can be toxic at overdose levels.

A single licked capsule is unlikely to harm, but a cat that chews through a bottle is a different situation. Fat-soluble vitamin toxicity (A, D, E) is the real concern.

Liquid fish oil from flavored pump bottles is the highest-risk product because cats can lick up larger volumes quickly.
