Can cats eat Almonds?

Caution

Caution. Almonds aren't on the acute-toxin list like macadamias, but they're a choking and obstruction hazard, high in fat, and bitter varieties can contain cyanogenic compounds. Not a safe share.

If your cat has eaten almonds

  1. For a small amount of plain almond: monitor for vomiting and signs of obstruction.
  2. For salted, chocolate-covered, or larger ingestions: call your vet.

What's the full picture?

Sweet almonds (the kind sold as snacks) are not specifically toxic to cats but are high in fat, which can trigger pancreatitis in sensitive individuals. The size and shape is also an obstruction risk for cats that swallow without chewing.

Bitter almonds are a different species and contain amygdalin, which releases cyanide. These are rarely sold in the US outside specific baking contexts.

Salted almonds add significant sodium. Chocolate-coated almonds add chocolate toxicity. Avoid both.

Symptoms to watch for

0โ€“24 hours
Vomiting, reduced appetite.
24โ€“72 hours
Pancreatitis signs with larger amounts.

About this guidance

Every entry on this site is compiled from published US veterinary toxicology sources โ€” AAFP, ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (ASPCA APCC) references, AVMA-registered practice materials, and peer-reviewed feline medicine literature. Where the evidence is mixed, we err on the cautious side because cats are unusually sensitive to many common substances that are harmless to humans and even to dogs.

This is general information written for US cat owners. It is not personalised veterinary advice for your specific cat, their age, weight, medical history, or the exact exposure you're dealing with. If your cat has eaten something or is unwell, call your vet first. The ASPCA Poison Control on (888) 426-4435 is available 24/7 for a small fee and can tell you whether an emergency visit is needed.

Entries are reviewed and updated as new research emerges. Spotted an error? Let us know โ€” corrections are investigated and applied within 24 hours. For more context on how we work, see about and our full disclaimer.
